Acne
- Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones and other substances on the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands) and hair follicles. These factors lead to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples or zits. Acne lesions usually occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Although acne is usually not a serious health threat, it can be a source of significant emotional distress. Severe acne can lead to permanent scarring.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer of the white blood cells, the cells in the body that normally fight infections. There are two main types of white blood cells-lymphoid cells and myeloid cells. ALL affects lymphoid cells.
Leukemia cells are abnormal cells that cannot do what normal blood cells do. The abnormal cells are immature white blood cells that cannot help the body fight infections. For this reason, children with ALL often get infections and have fevers.
ALL is also called acute lymphocytic leukemia. It is the most common leukemia in children.

Addison's disease Addison's disease is an endocrine or hormonal disorder that occurs in all age groups and afflicts men and women equally. The disease is characterized by weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, low blood pressure, and sometimes darkening of the skin in both exposed and nonexposed parts of the body.
Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol and, in some cases, the hormone aldosterone. The disease is also called adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism.

ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) ADHD is also known as hyperkinetic disorder and attention deficit disorder (ADD). These different names can be confusing but are all used to describe the problems of children who are unable to concentrate and are overactive.
It's estimated that ADHD may affect up to one in 20 school-age children. ADHD is at least four times more common in boys than girls. Children are usually diagnosed around the age of 7, but symptoms continue into adolescence and adulthood.
If you think your child may have ADHD, it's important that you get a diagnosis and start treatment as soon as possible so that his/her symptoms don't get worse and his/her development isn't too badly affected. There are a range of symptoms or behaviours that are associated with ADHD. Many of these behaviours are also seen in children who don't have ADHD. These are only a problem if they affect your child's social and school life.

Alcohol dependence Alcohol is an addictive drug on which you can become psychologically and physically dependent. Alcohol dependence syndrome (formerly known as alcoholism) is a pattern of routinely drinking excessive amounts of alcohol over a long period of time, resulting in addiction. It can be associated with psychological and physical health problems and can seriously affect your relationships with family and friends, and your job.
Alcohol dependence is usually characterised by an overpowering urge to drink alcohol and the inability to limit or stop drinking once you have started. Some people who are dependent on alcohol report being preoccupied with it and that the need to drink alcohol takes over their lives.
If you drink regularly, your body gets used to lots of alcohol and you may find that you need to drink increasingly more to feel its effects. This is known as alcohol tolerance and has a role in becoming addicted to alcohol.
Alcohol-induced cirrhosis
Alcohol - sensible drinking
Allergy
If you have an allergy, it means that your body's immune system reacts to an allergen - a substance that causes an allergic reaction. An allergic reaction happens when your body's immune system mistakes the allergen, for a harmful invader. Allergens aren't usually harmful and most people aren't sensitive to them.
Alopecia areata
Altitude sickness
Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks of daily living. In most people with AD, symptoms first appear after age 60. AD is the most common cause of dementia among older people, but it is not a normal part of aging. Dementia refers to a decline in cognitive function that interferes with daily life and activities. AD starts in a region of the brain that affects recent memory, then gradually spreads to other parts of the brain. Although treatment can slow the progression of AD and help manage its symptoms in some people, currently there is no cure for this devastating disease.

Ankle sprain A sprain is an injury to a ligament. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect one bone to another and so help to hold joints together.
A sprained ankle is the most common type of soft tissue injury. Soft tissue means any tissue in your body that isn't bone. Each year, around six out of every 1,000 people in England go to their GP or hospital accident and emergency department with a sprained ankle.
A minor sprain is when a ligament is stretched or partially torn. In severe sprains the ligament is completely torn. Sometimes the end of the bone to which a ligament is attached can crack.

Antibiotics Antibiotics are drugs used to treat infections caused by bacteria and other microorganisms.
Antidepressants Antidepressants are medicines that treat depression. Your doctor can prescribe them for you. They can improve your mood, sleep, appetite and concentration. It may take several weeks for them to help. There are several types of antidepressants. You and your doctor may have to try several before finding what works best for you.

Aortic aneurysm - abdominal Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a ballooning of the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the human body, which extends into the abdomen. If the wall of this blood vessel becomes weakened, it can stretch, "balloon" out and rupture. A rupture, if left untreated, can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding. The exact cause of this condition is unknown. However, it often occurs in older adults, especially males, those with a high cholesterol level, and in smokers. There also tends to be a genetic link to this disorder.

Appendicectomy (appendix removal)
Appendicitis Appendicitis is a painful swelling and infection of the appendix. The appendix is a fingerlike pouch attached to the large intestine and located in the lower right area of the abdomen. Scientists are not sure what the appendix does, if anything, but removing it does not appear to affect a person’s health. The inside of the appendix is called the appendiceal lumen. Mucus created by the appendix travels through the appendiceal lumen and empties into the large intestine.

Arrhythmia (palpitations)
Arthritis Many people start to feel pain and stiffness in their bodies over time. Sometimes their hands or knees or shoulders get sore and are hard to move and may become swollen. These people may have arthritis. Arthritis may be caused by inflammation of the tissue lining the joints. Some signs of inflammation include redness, heat, pain, and swelling. These problems are telling you that something is wrong. Joints are places where two bones meet, such as your elbow or knee. Over time, in some types of arthritis but not in all, the joints involved can become severely damaged. There are different types of arthritis. In some diseases in which arthritis occurs, other organs, such as your eyes, your chest, or your skin, can also be affected. Some people may worry that arthritis means they won’t be able to work or take care of their children and their family. Others think that you just have to accept things like arthritis.
